Stem Cell Outreach Success in Spanish: ¿Qué son las células madre?

languages

I’ve been working on a stem cell outreach program for education (SCOPE) the last couple years.

The mission of SCOPE is “stem cells not lost in translation”.

What is SCOPE?

I’ve got a white paper up on key facts and considerations for stem cells in dozens of languages.

More than 120,000 people across the globe visited a SCOPE page in 2013.

One of the great successes of SCOPE has been our Spanish language page.

In 2013 alone, that page called ¿Qué son las células madre? had more than 42,000 reads. That means that on average more than 100 people a day across the globe read that one page and that number is continuing to rapidly grow.

What made SCOPE possible? I guess the good and bad news is that there was no grant or institutional or any other funding behind it. I need to again thank a host of volunteer translators. Many, but not all of them are scientists. I also contributed a lot of my own time. One cool thing about this effort is it was possible without funding, although its reach and positive impact could be amplified by funding. I just don’t know of any creative funders out there willing to take on such a project.

I’m also working with the publisher of my book, Stem Cells: An Insider’s Guide, to get it published in translated form in 2013. There is strong interest for Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and many other editions. If you are publisher out there interested in doing an edition please contact me.

I’ve been so swamped that I haven’t had time to update SCOPE for a few months, but we have more languages coming in the pipeline so stay tuned!
