We kind of take for granted these days that embryonic stem cell research can proceed without any restrictions, at least at the federal level. However, in the early days of blogging here on The Niche the big debate and battle were over federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Things got very complicated and for a time the funding was illegal. We should learn from this science history because things could easily go back to that restrictive atmosphere again. Science is not in a …Read More

Four or five years ago the top stem cell story was the battle over federal funding of human embryonic stem (ES) cell research in the U.S. by James Sherley and Theresa Deisher. They were the two opponents of ES cell research making the most national headlines. Nature did a whole piece back then on Deisher entitled The Crusader (see image above). They filed a lawsuit trying to stop that funding based on their own moral beliefs and for a short time NIH was unable …Read More

A new patent has been awarded to James Sherley for a very unusual method claimed for making induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. The patent, No. 8,759,098, claims that a single non-genetic chemical agent, xanthine, can by itself reprogram adult stem cells (ASC) into iPS cells (aka iPSCs; see image they released at left). Surprising patent, huh? Another notable element to this patent story is the identity of the patentee: Dr. James L. Sherley. Sherley fought a court battle (Sherley v Sebelius) with the Obama administration seeking to ban all …Read More

Drs. James Sherley and Theresa Deisher are the two adult stem cell researchers who sued the federal government over federal funding of ESC research. They claimed that NIH funding of ESC research violated the law and also was unfair to them. This case has been bouncing around in various courts over the last couple years and at one point last year caused chaos through an injunction barring NIH funding of ESC research. Much to the relief of the stem cell research community, the plaintiffs …Read More

Dr. James Sherley, the scientist behind the lawsuit against federally-funded ES cell research, has penned an opinion piece in The Daily Caller today calling on NIH to, in his words, ‘do the right thing.’ However, what Sherley is really asking is for the NIH, other stem cell scientists, and all Americans to think like he does. In fact, U.S. News and World Report just came out with a poll indicating that 72% of Americans support embryonic stem cell research using lines that remain from …Read More
