The current President of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), Dr. Alan Trounson, will be leaving the agency in the near future to have more time with his family back in Australia.
As a result, CIRM will need a new President at a critical juncture in its history with only about 4 years of funding left. This new leader ideally will guide CIRM not only in the present but also during its transition to become whatever its identity will be in 2017 and beyond. There are probably only a handful of people in the world who are qualified for this job.
Kevin McCormack, CIRM Sr. Director of Public Communications, informed me that a Presidential Search Committee has already been formed. The Committee will consist of Board Members from CIRM’s Governing ICOC Board. According to McCormack, the Board Members who have agreed to serve in this capacity include the following:
Sue BryantAnne-Marie DuliegeSam HawgoodSteve JuelsgaardSherry LansingJeff SheehyJonathan ThomasArt TorresKristiina Vuori
CIRM is in the process of scheduling the first meeting for this committee.
Any thoughts on who the top candidates for the new CIRM President might be?

Crucial decision as the choice will set policy and procedure in place during the tenure of the appointee and probably beyond. Besides, obviously, the know-how and wherewithal, it is essential that the person have top-notch communicative skills as getting the message out there and winning over hearts and minds is paramount to the stem-cell movement – in terms of policy and in terms of funding.
