NBC News did a big on-line story and even a NBC Nightly News Segment on dubious stem cell therapies on Friday. Normally a national news story on the problem of the mushrooming stem cell clinics selling unapproved “treatments” would be a positive development, but this otherwise very nicely done story might have a major error that could confuse millions of viewers. In late 2010, Nicholas Wade, then a frequent science writer for the New York Times, wrote a frankly nasty piece on the stem cell field that was insulting and oversimplistic. On his show, Conan O’Brien on Monday (7/29/13) made a stem cell joke, perhaps without even realizing it. The joke was reprinted in the SacBee this morning (see image at right).
